Workshop 3: Create program automation

Modified on Mon, 7 Aug, 2023 at 4:22 PM

Step 1 - Create the Automation Bases

To do this, go to the Programming / Emission section.

This will display the interface for adding and editing an automation.

Method

  • Give your automation a name.
Note: the name should be quite self-explanatory.

  • Assign a color to visually identify your automation among the programming grid.

  • Select a scenario (Logo or No logo).

  • Assign a default duration to your automation for grid fill.

  • Set a prioritization path to rank your multiple future automations.

Result

The first elements of your automation are ready

Step 2 - Define the rules for an automation

To do this, stay on the screen where you are, then go to the "Automation" part of the interface for adding and modifying an automation.

Creation method: A simple rule.

  • Choose the “folder mode” via the 1st drop-down menu.

  • Choose the target "folder" via the 2nd drop-down menu.

  • Choose the "mode" of reading via the 3rd drop-down menu.

  • Random: random playback of the programs present in the folder.

  • Sequential: sequence reading of the programs present in the folder.

  • Indexed: reading.

  • Adjustment (<)

  • Adjustment (>)

  • Choose the number of items to play.

  • In random mode, define how many programs will be played randomly by the rule.

  • In sequential mode, define how many programs will be read one after another by the rule.

  • In indexed mode, set the index number of the program to play in the folder.

  • Check "once" if you want this element to be read only once per cycle.

  • Check "optional" if you want this element to be defined as optional when reading the cycle.

  • Choose the appropriate scenario.

  • Click on the “add” button

Result

Your automation has a rule.

An automation is made up of several rules, with an opening and a closing.

Step 3 - Define advanced automation rules

If you want to create a program automation with different elements, stay on the screen where you are, then go to the "Automation" part of the interface for adding and modifying an automation.

In this example, we will create an automation including:

  • Reading a program x1.

  • Opening with a jingle.

  • Advertising tunnel with SCTE-35 marker.

  • Playing a self-promo jingle #1.

  • Playing a bumper.

  • Playing a self-promo jingle #2.

  • Closing with a jingle.

Method

Rule #1 - play a program x1

Duration: 45 minutes / 2700 seconds

  • Select the “XXXX” program folder.

  • Select indexed mode (to read specific content).

  • Set the number of indexes to that of the program in the folder.

  • Select the “Add logo” scenario.

  • Click add.

Rule #2 - Opening with a jingle

Duration: 10 seconds

  • Select the “jingle” folder.

  • Select random mode (to provide diversity).

  • Set a number of 1.

  • Select the “No overlay” scenario.

  • Click add.

Rule #3 - Public tunnel with SCTE-35 marker

Duration: 2 minutes / 120 seconds

  • Select the “Ad Mat” folder.

  • Select random mode (to provide diversity).

  • Make sure you have activated the SCTE-35 out/in markers on the programs present in the "Ad Mat" folder.

  • Set a number of 1.

  • Select the “No overlay” scenario.

  • Click add.

Rule #4 - Playing a self-promo jingle #1

Duration: 10 seconds

  • Select the "jingle - auto-promo" folder.

  • Select random mode (to provide diversity).

  • Set a number of 1.

  • Select the “Add logo” scenario.

  • Click add.

Rule #5 - Playing a bumper

Duration: 2 seconds

  • Select the "bumper" folder.

  • Select random mode (to provide diversity)

  • Set a number of 1.

  • Select the “No overlay” scenario.

  • Click add.

Rule #6 - Playing a self-promo jingle #1

Duration: 10 seconds

  • Select the "jingle - auto-promo" folder.

  • Select random mode (to provide diversity).

  • Set a number of 1.

  • Select the “Add logo” scenario.

  • Click add.

Rule #7 - Closing with a jingle

Duration: 10 seconds

  • Select the “jingle” folder.

  • Select random mode (to provide diversity).

  • Set a number of 1.

  • Select the “No overlay” scenario.

  • Click add.

Result

Your advanced automation is ready!

Total programming time for 1 loop:

Your automation has several scheduling rules. This corresponds to a loop of XXXX seconds/minutes.
Multiplying the programming time on the grid by 2.3 or 4 allows the Playout to create a broadcast loop of 2.3 or 4 this set of programs.

Step 4 - Add broadcast constrained rules

If you want to chain a certain number of programming loops on your programming grid, it may be interesting to apply distribution constraints to your rules, thus allowing certain programming errors:

  • Do not broadcast the same content more than once for X minute

  • Do not play the same file more than once for X minutes.

To do this, go to the Programming / Rules section. This will display the interface for adding and modifying a constraint rule.

Creation method: A simple constraint rule.

  • Give your rule a meaningful name.

  • Choose the "Do not repeat" rule.

  • Choose the condition if same "title".

  • Set a time interval during which the restriction should apply for automation.

Ex: 2,3 or 4 times the duration of your automation.

  • Click "Add Rule".

Result

Your constraint rule will prevent the same program from playing for multiple programming loops.

Your automation has several scheduling rules.
